Managing DrFirst Workflows

Accessing DrFirst

DrFirst is accessed exclusively through BestNotes via Single Sign-On (SSO). There are few different ways to launch DrFirst. To prescribe, manage medications, or interact with a client follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the patient's chart in BestNotes.
  2. Click the ePrescribe button.

Alternatively, medication management can be accessed from the Med/Clinical window:

  1. Navigate to Med/Clinical and select Meds.
  2. Select Manage DrFirst at the top of the window or expand a medication and select Manage Medication.

To view pending medications, previously sent prescriptions or messages coming from the pharmacy follow these steps:

  1. Go to the For Review tab from the BestNotes Calendar page.
  2. Make the appropriate selection, View Pending Medications or View Med Messages.

Prescribing a Medication

To prescribe medications, providers must first access DrFirst and complete the initial order details.

  1. Access DrFirst from the patient's chart by selecting the ePrescribe button.
  2. Click Create New Rx and search for the medication by name.
  3. Complete all required yellow fields, including patient directions and quantity.
  4. Authorize the prescription by navigating to the Prescription Summary, entering your unique signature password, and selecting Send.

Add Medication

This workflow is used for documentation purposes, such as recording a patient's intake medications, without sending a prescription.

  1. Select Add Medication from the patient's active medication list area.
  2. Document the medication details for record-keeping in BestNotes and the eMAR.

Save & Close

It is important to remember to log off of DrFirst after making any changes to Medications. Successfully logging off after medication management will ensure BestNotes and DrFirst are always up to date.

  1. Select Your Name located in the upper right corner of DrFirst.
  2. Select Save & Close.

Manage Pharmacies

Easily locate and save a patient's preferred pharmacy for all future prescriptions.

  1. Select the magnifying glass or Browse Pharmacy to search for a pharmacy.
  2. Fill in the pharmacy details and select Search.
  3. Select the Star from the search results to add it to the favorites list.

Manage Favorites

Saving medications as favorites streamlines the prescribing process by pre-populating frequently used details.

  1. From the Settings Menu, navigate to Utilities, and then Manage Favorites.
  2. Click Add Favorite.
  3. Search the medication and fill in all the patient directions.

Prescription Summary

The Prescription Summary provides a bird's-eye view of all pending medications requiring provider action.

  1. Go to the For Review tab on the BestNotes calendar.
  2. Review medications waiting for signature or pending transit to the pharmacy.

Managing Provider Agents

Provider Agents (such as LPNs or RNs) can order non-controlled prescriptions on behalf of a provider. The DrFirst Administrator manages these assignments.

  1. Navigate to DrFirst and select the menu at the top left of the page.
  2. Select Utilities, then Manage Provider Agent Assignments.
  3. In the User to Manage field, select Clear to remove any existing entry and enter the name of the provider whose agents you are managing (enter the last name first).
  4. The current authorized agents will be on the left, and available providers to authorize will be on the right.
  5. Click the Authorize button next to a user's name to add them as a Provider Agent.
